Hip Hop Karaoke

    Started in New York City in 2004, Hip Hop Karaoke (HHK) offers the chance for people to pay homage to their favourite artists and properly represent their tracks in a 'karaoke' style format. While initially an underground event, HHK has proliferated around the world, spawning nights in countless major urban centres and growing a huge rep as the only true spot to throw down a real karaoke track. HHK embraces the raw 'show n prove' nature of emceeing, allowing people to kick their favourite jams over proper instrumentals (no thin-ass re-worked typical karaoke beats) on stage with a real sound system and DJ.


While HHK has blown up around the world gaining an international cult-like following, December marked its official arrival in the Pacific North-West. Presented at Fortune Sound Club on a monthly basis, HHK Vancouver is throwing down with DJ SEKO and Flipout as host.


The format of HHK in Vancouver is straightforward, and designed to create a positive environment for guests and performers alike. Starting at 10 pm, we run 'sets' of 4-5 people every 15-20 minutes with the DJ spinning in between to keep things poppin off. You will be provided with a typed lyric sheet (if needed) and some hypeman-style back up vocals to keep you sounding good and keep your flow on point, even if you fumble a bit. We want this to be an inclusive and un-intimidating event, that embraces more than the usual freestyle backpacker open mic type cats. We hope to get lots of these proper emcees out, but more importantly draw all the closet hip hop heads out to share that track they kill in the shower every morning. So rally your crew, get your shit together and come to a unique and super bumpin party.

In order to GUARANTEE YOUR SPOT rhyming you should PRE-REGISTER your track with us by sending over your contact info (name, number, email) and what song you want to do. We need to get this done in advance to get the instrumentals locked, and provide the lyrics if needed. We will have lots of core tracks available for people who get brave on the night of, but to make sure we have your choice song you need to get at us in advance
