Isle of Thieves
Isle of Thieves is a fusion of energetic rhythm, textural riffs, driving power chords, catchy synth leads, and memorable vocal melodies. The quintet was formed in the spring of 2006, and consists of Japeth (singer/songwriter/guitarist), Matt Coatsworth (drums), Justin Kwan (synthesizers/vocals), Mike Marsh (lead guitar), and Charles Canovas (bass guitar). Together, they produce a harmonious blend of punky alt-rock, brit-pop, and new wave, that is reminiscent of bands such as Jimmy Eat World, Suede, Against Me, and The Killers.
The band hooked up with Producer/Engineer Mike Langford (Evans Blue, Vaeda, Rains, and Rex Goudie) in the summer of 2006 to record a demo at The Pocket Studios. However, the band and Mike developed a working relationship and began recording a full-length album which was mastered by Joao Carvalho (Billy Talent, Sam Roberts, Alexisonfire, Nickelback, etc).
In early 2008, Isle of Thieves completed their debut album entitled ‘Only Human’. It contains 10 tracks that exhibit the delicate balance between innovation and familiarity, youthful energy and lyrical maturity.
Currently, the band is in the studio with platinum producer Greig Nori (Sum 41, Hedley, The New Cities, Iggy Pop and host of MuchMusic's, "DisBand") to record their follow up album to "Only Human". In more recent news, the band was nominated for “Artist of the Year” at the 2009 Verge Music Awards for The Verge XM 87 alongside artists such as Metric, Alexisonfire, Bedouin Soundclash, and the Arcade Fire. They've also been featured on MuchMusic as part of the 2009 Canadian Music Week festivities.
This summer, Isle of Thieves could be seen in some of Ontario’s largest festivals including the Cutting Edge Music Festival, the S.C.E.N.E. Music Festival, The Rogers Spring Music Festival, and Rock ‘N The Park while sharing the stage with such acts as The Roots, Andrew W.K., Finger Eleven, Alexisonfire, and Stereos. Earlier this year, the band also had an exclusive "Live @ The Verge" session with The Verge XM 87 which aired in March 8th. With their single "Hollywood", they are currently on regular rotation on The Verge XM 87, Fusion Rock Radio, IndieLove Radio, X1FM, and CBC Radio 3 as well as over 50 stations across Canada. Isle of Thieves are also the first independent band to break through to the Fusion Rock Radio "Top Ten Countdown" which is syndicated in over 700 stations worldwide with "Hollywood" debuting at #2 with over 100,000. By being listener favourites on UK internet radio stations, their music is available on Nexus Radio UK and TSM Radio as well as having received airplay on BBC Radio.
